Guy Fawkes Night

Guy Fawkes Night is a special evening in the UK with the added bonus that no costume is required. To enjoy just step out after dark and warm yourself against any of the many bonfires in your neighbourhood/city and watch all the pretty fireworks in the sky. It is full of excitement, the air is completely smoky and fogged, the noise of fireworks exploding surrounds you. Great fun if you are child or child-at-heart.

Forget Ocean's 11, this is Fawke's 13. Part of my favourite history programme for kids (and adults) Horrible Histories.

The traditional food to be eaten today is Yorkshire Parkin which is a sweet gingerbread made with oats. It is lovely and dark, sticky and full of treacle. Recipe here.
