Leipzig

All I knew about Leipzig was that it was a publishing city. And then I visited and it last weekend and discovered a lot more about this lovely historical yet modern city.

Some of the world's greatest composers and musicians have lived and worked here. Think Bach, Mendelssohn, Wagner and the Schumanns. Take a guided walk linking all the important sights.

Thomaskirche - the workplace and final resting place of  Johann Sebastien Bach (His remains lie beneath a bronze plate infront of the altar). He was Cantor here between 1723- to his death in 1750.

Altes Rathaus (old town hall)

The old stock exchange. Totally destroyed during the war it was completely reconstructed and was finished in 1962. It looks quite cute and dolls-housey I think.

Dessert in one of the most famous restaurants in Germany - Auerbachs Keller.

Founded in 1525 this restaurant was made immortal with Goethe's Faust - In Part 1 Mephistopheles and Faust carouse here with other students before rolling off on a beer barrel. Pricey, touristy but a "must do" and the food is good.

Window shopping in a pretty art nouveau arcade

Völkerschlachtdenkmal - Half a million Prussian, Austrian and Russian soldiers fought here against Napoleon in 1813. One in 5 never made it home. This colossal 91m high Monument to the Battle of the Nations is pure drama. It also wouldn't look soo out of place in an Indiana Jones movie. What do you think?
